Plumber, The

"Good tradespeople are so hard to find"
4 stars

Peter Weir made this telemovie directly after Picnic at Hanging Rock, and itís a big departure in scale.

The small-screen scope and 75 minute length is perfectly suited to the subject matter: a simple tale about a work-at-home academic wife (Judy Morris) whoís tormented by a belligerent and cunning plumber (Ivor Kants). To pad this tale any further would have fatally stretched credibility.

The key performers are excellent - Morris makes the wife believable and never silly, Kants is simultaneously persuasive and repellant. Weir admirably sustains the sinister mood during daytime (when the plumberís about) instead of the traditional nighttime (when the husband returns) and gives the university tower apartments the oppressive and claustrophobic feel of a prison.

His neat payback climax ends the story on a perfect note.
