"If it's broken, then fix it"
2 stars

I became an instant fan of the Broken Lizard crew when they released SUPER TROOPERS. It was a silly and generally lowbrow affair, but it had some memorable characters, some damn funny jokes, and an infectious sense of fun about it that was hard to ignore. Therefore, it gives me no joy to say that I should have spent my nine dollars on a rental of SUPER TROOPERS and a six pack of beer, rather than have my enthusiasm for Broken Lizard's future outings tarnished.

It's difficult to say where exactly things went wrong during the making of this film. I mean, anyone who saw SUPER TROOPERS (and didn't hate it) knows that these guys are funny, and although the type of comedy they do is crude and base, they do it very well. Even crude and base comedy has to be done well, if it's actually going to be funny (see any random post-Wedding Singer Adam Sandler movie for a fine example of how even lowbrow can be butchered in the wrong hands).

Mooching its basic plot from I Still Know What You Did Last Summer (a turgid suck heap in its own right), Club Dread introduces us to a mish-mash of really hot scantily-clad girls and goofy, obnoxious guys. At the so-called "Paradise Island Resort", the guests are almost indistinguishable from the employees, as everyone is simply there to party. We are introduced to a slew of recognizable faces from the Broken Lizard crew, all of them playing characters that are not funny, continue to be not funny, and yet manage to pull off a few truly hilarious scenes.

Alas, it's too few and way too far between. I never thought I would go for remarkably long periods of being bored in a Broken Lizard film, but large chunks of it needed to be cut out or re-shot until they were somehow made funny.

When employees start disappearing, their bloody corpses found shortly afterward, the motley crew of employees (led by a Jimmy Buffetesque Bill Paxton - apparently in the Cap'n Ron phase of his career) has to try and keep the guests calm while figuring out who the murderer is. The killer has sabotaged all of the boats and radios, so that his spree may continue uninterrupted. And here is where we start running into problems.

Is Club Dread a comedy movie or a horror movie? It's trying to be a comedy-horror movie, but it's not being tongue-in-cheek enough to set the proper tone. While some moments of the murder scenes are chuckle-worthy, most of them seem to play out far too seriously, looking as if they could have come from any random bad horror movie of the past decade. Criticize the Scary Movie franchise all you like, but at least those films set the right tone and stuck with it. Club Dread seems almost schizophrenic, as it flip-flops between stoner comedy and sight gags to dreadfully dull "running from the axe murderer" bits that seem to go on forever.

Even now, I marvel at just how dismal the pacing was, how poorly-written the script was, and how absolutely flaccid the direction and performances were. Besides a lot of eye candy (Thanks for the nude scene, Jordan Ladd!) and perhaps a half-dozen truly laugh-out-loud bits, there is nothing much to recommend Club Dread. Most disappointing of all is just how dull and underdeveloped the characters are, compared to their Super Trooper counterparts, each of whom had a unique flavor that contributed towards a rich comedic blend.

Although I'm not ready to declare the demise of Broken Lizard's fame just yet, I am less hopeful of their future. It would pain me to see them drop off of the radar before they hit their stride.
