"Crap! Crap, crap, crap, CRAP! CRAAAAAAAP!"
1 stars

As a long-time Dick Tracy fan, I'm probably the wrong person to write this review....

Sure, Dick Tracy was a comic strip, and it had cartooney villains and a square-jawed, cartooney hero. Still, it was a hardcore, hard-boiled detective strip, based on the sort of thing you'd read in a Raymond Chandler novel. I was hoping to see something on the order of _The Big Sleep_--add a few wrist-radios and other fun gimmicks, and overdo the classic film noir style to give it a bit of a comic edge, but that's how I would have done Dick Tracy.

Instead, we get something that tried to be animated, but wasn't. _Who Framed Roger Rabbit_, without the 'toons, and with a weaker plot. When you've got a weaker plot than a half-animated feature, then you're doing something WRONG. Stop. Go back to drawing board. Burn drawing board. Leave film industry, never to return.

Style points aside, it sucked. The story was lame, the ending was contrived, and Madonna was unnecessary.

One more thing about this movie that happens to also be a pet peeve of mine: the great thing about comic books and comic strips (something that could easily be carried over to comic-based film franchises) is that the villians rarely die. Even if they do, you've got this whole rogue's gallery to choose from, and you know that there's more adventure around the corner. That's part of the appeal.

Instead, the hacks who put together _Dick Tracy_ decide to introduce every single villian that's ever graced the Sunday funnies, and kill them all off, most of them in insipid, bit-part-type ways. In Hollywood, it seems, the villians have to die at the end, or the audience (the same audience that eagerly awaits the Sunday paper to see how Tracy gets out of this week's pickle) won't feel a proper sense of closure.

And did Hollywood learn from this ridiculous waste of time? Nope, they decided to follow the same model in the Batman movies. Introduce villian, kill villian. Introduce so many villians that only die-hard fans will know them from one another, kill all of them.

The saddest thing about this movie is that Warren Beatty was perfect for the role. Hell, most of the actors/actresses were perfect for their roles. It might have made a nice serial, but it was too much to cram into one film.

Bleah. Don't waste your money. Go rent an old Bogart movie. Save yerself the trouble.
