Kill Bill: Vol. 2

"...or, How to Turn One Brilliant Experience Into Two Very Good Ones"
4 stars

Commerce and art: an uncomfortable marriage at best, and nowhere is this more evident than in the world of movies. You rarely hear about an artist's patron commanding him to 'cut 15%' of his most recent painting in an effort to make the piece more commercial, and rare is the case in which a poet is asked to 'stretch it out' in order to cull two separate works from one cohesive whole. But in the movie business, artistry is indulged so long as the fiscal concerns are addressed first. Which brings us to Kill Bill, one clearly brilliant movie that was stretched out into two features like an overused wad of chewing gum that could eventually be sold based upon its size, consistency be damned.

Even the most inexperienced of film students could point to six or seven sequences in Kill Bill Vol. 2 that were clearly destined for the cutting room floor. That's what's bound to happen when you take one 3-hour movie and stretch it into two 2+ hour movies: whoever swept up in the editing room is bound to get a late night phone call demanding all that excised footage. Like, now.

It speaks to a fundamental difference between moviemaking and moneymaking: anyone out there who really believes that Mr. Tarantino wanted to make two Kill Bill "volumes" instead of one rather sprawling epic is fooling himself. The splitting of the film into two is a move born solely from a desire for extra revenue streams, and sadly it's turned what was inevitably one phenomenal film into two pretty darn good films.

Sorry for ranting on the same old schpiel from back when Vol. 1 was released, but I'm still convinced that all of the flaws inherent in chapters 1 and 2 come almost exclusively from the decision to chop the film into two. Were Kill Bill only one movie, all of the "dead air" in Vol. 2 (and trust me, there's plenty) would have existed only as 'deleted scenes' on the eventual DVD release.

All that aside, the end products are what they are, and all griping aside:both 'halves' still exist as extremely entertaining diversions - particularly if you're even half the movie freak that Quentin Tarantino clearly is.

Picking up right where the first chapter left off, Vol. 2 continues the grisly tale of the Blood-Spattered Bride, a singularly obsessed woman who will stop at nothing to wreak vengeance on those who murdered her fiance, stole her unborn child and left her for dead in a dingy El Paso wedding chapel. With a handful of nemeses capably dispatched in Vol. 1, The Bride heads out to make some hay with Budd (Michael Madsen), Elle (Daryl Hannah) and Big Bill himself (David Carradine). Since this IS a Quentin Tarantino joint, you can of course expect frequent plot divergences, a decidedly fractured framework, long slow bouts of adjective-laden banter, lots of high-end violence, and pop culture references by the truckload.

Uma Thurman continues her rip-snorting ride through a Hell Hath No Fury persona, and one stops to consider how far this actress has come since her days as a model who starred in sex comedies with Anthony Michael Hall. Her performance is brilliant, the doe-eyed glue that holds this whole crazy concoction together. Considerably (and surprisingly) effective is Daryl Hannah, who delivers arguably her best work ever as a one-eyed villainess. Michael Madsen oozes his reptilian charm through Vol. 2's first half, while David Carradine acquits himself quite admirably in the second. (His 'Superman speech' is one that will live on as one of Quentin's most adored passages.)

Despite a handful of truly unnecessary rest stops and a few sequences that clearly go on way longer than they need to, Vol. 2 is, like its "predecessor", packed to the rafters with movie references, knowing nods to flicks both well-revered and obscure. Put aside the few fiscally-induced flaws and you're looking at a film that simply oozes with Movie Love. From the Martial Arts training scenes to a truly fantastic sequence of horror in which The Bride is buried alive, you'd need a spreadsheet and a few hours on the Internet Movie Database to catalog all of Tarantino's eclectic influences. Warts and all, Kill Bill is a love letter to cinema and a true treat for those who are obsessed with it.

If there's one thing that's missing, it's that one thing that so effortlessly blew us away in Vol. 1; and that would be the action scenes. Even the most devoted of Tarantino's fans (myself included) were unprepared for the filmmaker's first foray into the true action sequence, and Vol. 1 was overstuffed with wild crazy kinetic fun. Vol.2 has...almost no action whatsoever. I suppose it could be seen as a healthy balance: Vol. 1 was, for the most part, lacking that crisp Tarantino dialogue we all love so much, Vol. 2 reinstates the contorted wordplay while avoiding the fight scenes almost entirely. Those who go in to Vol. 2 with thoughts of Pulp Fiction will have a better time than those who go in thinking about The House of the Blue Leaves.

And that's kind of a shame, because...hey, Quentin gave up the crazy-ass action material in Vol. 1 - so one can hardly be faulted if they expect a little more of the same. Again, this deficiency casts a spotlight back to the clumsy way in which the movies were separated. One long film that's frontloaded with action scenes is a lot more enjoyable than two movies in which one gets all the brawlin' and the other gets all the yappin'.

It's my fondest hope that we one day get to see Quentin's 'original cut'. You remember, that "3-hour action flick" that was simply too 'extreme' to unleash on an unprepared public? If you took the finest components of Vols. 1 and 2, and there are MANY to choose from, you could come up with a movie that's easily on par with Tarantino's best work. And that includes Pulp Fiction.
