Kill Bill: Vol. 2

"I Waited, and I Watched, and I got Bloody Dissatisfied"
3 stars

After I left the screening of KILL BILL 2, feeling more than a little disappointed, I tried to figure out where the blame lay. Had my expectations simply been too high, after the first film had vaulted my enthusiasm into the realm of slavering fanboyism? Perhaps . . . but my expectations would have never been so inflated if Tarantino had not set the bar so high in the first place. Rather than top VOLUME 1 with a truly dazzling leap over that bar, Q.T. seems content to merely saunter under it. While VOLUME 1 ended in overdrive, VOLUME 2 rarely gets out of third gear before finally running out of gas and mercifully sputtering to a halt.

Okay, maybe I’m just playing the weepy, jilted fan. It wasn’t that bad. In fact, several parts of it are quite good. We are talking about Quentin Fucking Tarantino here, after all, a man who I believe is incapable of making a true suck-fest, despite his self-indulgent whims and the habit of tossing out pop-cultural references to the point of distraction. Had I never seen Volume 1, I probably would have found this to be a serviceable addition to the Tarantino canon. Unfortunately, the parts of Volume 2 that really shined only served to remind me of the magic of Volume 1 that several other stretches of the film lacked.

The people who will enjoy Volume 2 the most are those who deplored the first film’s excess of violence and bemoaned its lack of character development. Why did The Bride (Uma Thurman) leave the Deadly Viper Assassination Squad? Why did Bill (David Carradine) and the others come after her, murdering her entire wedding party and leaving her in a coma? Fear not, all of these questions will be answered in good time. Volume 2 begins with the Bride driving across the California desert, tracking down the remaining enemies on her “Death List 5” as she works her way up to Bill himself. She begins with Bud (Michael Madsen), who has also retired from the assassination biz and is now living in a trailer that he can barely afford from his shitty job as a bouncer at the local strip club. The notoriously cold-hearted bitch Elle Driver (Darryl Hannah) is also looming on the horizon, and The Bride encounters some rather trying setbacks in her quest for vengeance, including a harrowing sequence of being buried alive that would have made Edgar Allen Poe proud. These setbacks serve to work the Bride, and the viewer, into a lather for cruel revenge, with the promise of some truly bloody satisfaction.

Unfortunately, it fails to deliver on that promise. More than once, a great fight scene is hinted at as being right around the corner, only for it to never materialize. Oh, there’s some fighting, of course, but the fisticuffs are too few and way too far between, and are cut far too short by one ploy or another. It’s kind of like when Indiana Jones pulled his pistol on the swordsman and shot him in Raiders of the Lost Ark -You were ready to see this big bad fight, and suddenly it was over. Only when Indie did it, it was funny, a nice break amidst all of the action and dramatic tension. But when you witness one of the greatest action sequences of all time at the end of the previous film, wait six months to see the follow up, sit through long stretches of some fairly substandard dialogue (at least by Tarantino standards), only to get one or two fight scenes that are cut short just as they are starting to pick up momentum – well, that’s not funny, my friends. That’s cheap. The Bride is robbed of a proper revenge, and the audience is robbed right along with her.

Splitting what was originally one film into two, however, may have been the right move in this case. While the origin of that split was surely the greed of Miramax executives, Volumes 1 and 2 are so stylistically different that it’s hard to imagine they were originally shot as one film in the first place. While Volume 1 was campy, bloody, and wildly kinetic, Volume 2 is brooding, meandering, and distinctly lacking the energy and verve of its predecessor. Even the most notable fight scene, between Elle and The Bride, ends with a cheap shot that is hilarious at first because of its unexpectedness, but will then leave you feeling duped five minutes later when you realize you should have gotten a lot more out of that showdown than what Q.T. gave us.

Now, I’m not saying that this film needed another “House of Blue Leaves” bloodbath. After pulling off such a masterful feat of an action sequence, trying to do it again would be both redundant and ultimately setting oneself up for failure. But the driving, primary thrusts of Volume 1 were its simple yet compelling themes of action and revenge, which are given precious little follow-through in Volume 2. These final fight scenes were supposed to be truly memorable, not just for their technical aspects, but for the emotional connotations surrounding them. The Bride deserved her bloody satisfaction, and we deserved to watch every last drop of it after a very long six month's wait. Instead, we are completely cheated out of one confrontation, mostly cheated out of the one that should have mattered most, and left with one solid fight scene that is cut short of its full potential and ends up feeling like a rehash of The Bride’s catfight with Vernita Green in Volume 1.

“All right,” you say. “Enough bitching about how little action there is. What about the story, and the characters?” Both are certainly much more fleshed out than in the previous installment. But while it’s nice to finally get some answers about these characters and the motivations that drive them, these revelations are a double-edged sword. Strangely enough, the more we learn about the characters’ reasons, the less interesting the characters themselves become. The larger-than-life mystique surrounding The Bride, Bill, and the Vipers simply evaporates, taking some of their appeal with it. And while everyone gives solid performances in Volume 2, their interactions sometimes grow tedious, rife with redundancy and unecessary filler. I would have gladly been left in the dark about what truly drove these characters, in order to preserve that wonderful sense of inscrutability that once surrounded them.

Thankfully, there are some moments of levity that help redeem Volume 2. Flashbacks to The Bride’s training with the cranky old Kung Fu master Pai Mei (Gordon Liu, last seen as Crazy 88’s leader Johnny Mo in Volume 1) are a bit of fun, and Tarantino gets a bonus point for referencing Carradine’s “Kane” character from the Kung-Fu T.V. series, as well as the film Shogun Assassin (Even if it is just the inferior English dubbed version of the Lone Wolf and Cub series).

Some sterling moments aside, the second installment of KILL BILL is mostly a Buzz kill, pissing away all of the momentum so masterfully built up by VOLUME 1. It is worth seeing for closure’s sake, and (if humanly possible) without the baggage and expectations that were carried over from its predecessor. But as a follow up to one of the greatest action/tribute films in history, it is a sad example of wasted potential.
