Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle
[] Buy posters from this movie
by Jason Whyte

"Dude, where's your White Castle?"
4 stars

When I first saw the trailer for “Harold and Kumar Go To White Castle”, I was initially bored, and then offended by the trailer narrator referring to actor John Cho as “That Asian guy from American Pie!” and then Kal Penn as “That Indian guy from Van Wilder!” It certainly didn’t help that Danny Leiner, the director of “Dude, Where’s My Car?” also helmed this film. And it definitely doesn’t help that nearly every buddy comedy released over the past few years has been utterly despicable.

A few moments into “Harold and Kumar”, however, I was laughing. The film’s humour may be juvenile at times, but the heart is in the right place, and that we have two very capable and likable lead actors here seals the deal. I remember John Cho from the “American Pie” films, but he was certainly remembered from “Better Luck Tomorrow” as the murder victim of the group of Asian high school kids. Kal Penn is best known for his Indian character in “Van Wilder”, which was a film I was certainly NOT a fan of, nor his performance. And yet together in their own film, the two make a pretty hilarious duo.

Harold (John Cho) works in financing, and Kumar is a party guy whose parents believe he is in medical school. Both are heavily into junk food and the reefer, and the night before Kumar has a big interview and Harold is slammed with a whole bunch of accounting work, they get the crave for some “Sliders” (also known as White Castle burgers) and set out on a mission to get their munchies satisfied. What starts out as a simple adventure turns out into a road trip of sorts with enemies, a freakshow, topless women, a raccoon, a hippie pot dealer, some truly violence-hungry lawmen and a whole bunch of cameos from friends of the director. And so on. There’s also a little love interest with Harold and a neighbour (Paula Garces from “Clockstoppers”) and Harold doesn’t have the guts to talk to her.

Sure, it’s all silly stuff, but what’s interesting about Harold and Kumar is that they’re a little bit more sophisticated than your average stoner comedy duo. The two actually have a bit of smarts to them to go along with the excessive cloud of pot smoke; even though they’re high, they’re think rationally and educated on the White Castle run rather than running around like Ashton Kutcher and Seann William Scott with their heads cut off. We get the giggles at their adventures and want them to reach their destination, which is really just a place to knock back a few burgers.

And for the most part, the comic timing is spot-on. When Neil Patrick Harris shows up, it actually turns out to be the actor himself making light of his post TV-star image, and all he wants to do is pick up women by using his Doogie Howser lines. Even the placement of White Castle is pretty amusing; if they ever plan to do a sequel, set it in LA and call it “Harold and Kumar Go To In N’ Out Burger.”

This is nothing more than a midnight flick in the spirit of Cheech and Chong and “Rocky Horror Picture Show” that I’m sure will be successful in the long run. A film that you invite a bunch of buddies over to chill with many beers handy. It’s a surprisingly funny comedy that is far from perfect, but like those “Sliders”, it is welcome while it lasts.
